One big event after the other………..it never gets boring in Vail !!!!!!!
Last weekend Vail hosted the firstVail Gay Ski Week which turned out to be a huge success. People attending had a blast. Many people from all over the country, especially the East Coast, California and the Denver area traveled to Vail and enjoyed awesome snow, parties and events the Vail Gay Ski Week team came up with. Most people showed up Thursday for the first event- the Women Wrestling in Samanas. Nobody ever imagined that women wrestling could be such fun. The 10 woman wrestler gave their best and even more… People watching were pushing each other to get the best spot in order to see the girls rolling on the floor. Then Friday morning most went out skiing and then getting ready for the Beer Bust. The Beer Bust Friday night was the first big party. Hosted in the Donovan Pavillion in Vail, the cowboy themed party was a great party. People enjoyed drinks and dancing to DJ Sammy Jo till midnight. Saturday morning seemed kind of slow. Registration was open at 8am but most people showed up later which was related to the Beer Bust and dancing the night before ….But once up, groups of skiers and boarders went out together and enjoyed the amazing Colorado weather and snow on the slopes. After skiing most went back to the Vail Plaza to relax in the Plaza Hot Tub and enjoy some drinks to prepare for the final party Saturday night – the POPular Party. During the Popular Party with dj guillaume the silent auction was taking place approaching final bits for its closing at midnight. The Vail Gay Ski Week team managed to get amazing prices from resorts, art galleries, sport shops, hotels…on which participants were biting on. Most people at the party took advantage of the fact that they were staying right at the party place, the Vail Plaza, so that they could party really hard and then just roll in their room once the party was done at 2am. Sunday morning was even slower than Saturday…most participants decided to relax and then simply check out and travel home with amazing memories and looking forward to Vail Gay Summer and the next Vail Gay Ski Week.
Once Vail Gay Ski Week is over Vail Village is already getting ready for the next big event, theCarniVail. In less than two weeks, February 14th to the 21st the next event will be hosted in the party mountain town. Bridge Street will become Bourbon Street! CarniVail starts of on Sunday 14th up on Eagle’s Nest, located at the top of the Eagle Bahn Gondola, with true Cajun dishes including Crawfish, Gumbo, Jambalaya, music and more! The Bud Light Fat Tuesday Parade and Street Party with Frogs Gone Fishin’ and a Float Competition is going on February 16th, and on Friday, February 19 the event will be finished up with a free concert of Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe presented by Southern Comfort.

Economic concerns have serious impacts on tourism, yet this doesn’t need to be the case if you plan a cost conscious plan to your vacation. In doing so you can enjoy another great trip to Vail or Beaver Creek without spending a fortune, sounds intriguing doesn’t it? Below you’ll find some appropriate tips for how to reduce your vacation’s cost while still maximizing your enjoyment.
1) Renting in larger numbers reduces the cost per person, as such renting a private home with friends and family is a great way to ensure affordable lodging. In addition, houses are often well equipped with a wide variety of amenitites and features to entertain the whole family. From hot tubs to private theaters, pinball machines to workout equipment private homes are perfect for families looking to spend some quality family time.
2) With a number of grocery stores in the Vail Valley and speciality meat/seafood stores cooking at home is not only an attractive and fun activity but very cost conscious. My recommendation for grocery stores is the City Market in West Vail, it offers great produce and has a large meat department.
3) Enjoy activities in Vail aside from skiing, though Vail and Beaver Creek are two of North America’s best mountains the Vail Valley offers a wide array of activities. Snow shoeing in the neighboring mountains is a great activity and very peaceful as you meander through serene environments, snowmobiling is a great alternative for guests looking for a more adventorous activity. Our staff can reccommend great places to do either.

With Fall upon us, as evident by the rapidly changing color of the leaves, it appears Winter isn’t so far off either. A few small storms have scattered higher elevations with snow in the past weeks but it appears the first significant storm of late Fall, or Winter is bringing a healthy helping of snow for higher elevations Saturday.
With the 2008 Vail International Dance Festival quickly approaching Vail’s own Plum TV got direct access to director Damian Woetzel for a great interview. This personal interview allows Damian Woetzel to inform viewers of what the highlights of this year’s festival will be, in addition he discusses the success of last year’s festival and what will live on from it.

I’ve struggled over where to begin this post for roughly twenty minutes now, it’s intriguing that after one of the best weekends of my life all I can recollect are the little things; laughter, stories, adventures and the such…yet no concrete storyline. But in many ways that’s the beauty of such a weekend, through words it’s nearly impossible to recount such events…hopefully photos will do the job.
Friday July 11th Friday Afternoon Club at Vail
It doesn’t take much to get our group on Vail mountain, so when Friday Afternoon Club rolls around offering free gondola rides to the top of Vail and entertainment it quickly becomes the place to be. This Friday was no exception, the plaza on top of the gondola was jam packed with a wide array of people enjoying the start of their weekend. Perfect weather kept the crowd up there till threats of walking down forced everyone to cram into the last gondolas.
For the older portion of the crowd the next move was simple, get off the gondola walk all 10 yards to Garfinkel’s and keep the night going. The bar was crowded as was the deck, but unquestionably with such a nice night the deck was the the place to be as evidenced by a festive and lively crowd.
Saturday July 12th Hiking down West Vail
Saturday we ventured off into the depths of West Vail where we spent the better part of the day walking down the mountain. Exploring the terrain, vegetation and paths was quite intriguing and presented plenty of photo opportunities which will be showcased here.

Sunday July 13th Bottling Wine and Eating Raw Vegan
For Scott, Thomas and Graham the opportunity to tour a wine bottling facility was too much to pass on…regardless if it was Sunday. The three of us were accompanied (or should I say chaperoned) by experienced wine producer Rich tenBraak as we toured the bottling facilities at the 4 Eagle Ranch. Rich has bottled over 2500 bottles in his life and was unquestionably the perfect guide to our tour (check his interview from last week). As for the actual bottling, well it was everything you could ever desire and more.
All of us would like to thank 4 Eagle Ranch for a great experience!!

Thomas, Graham and Scott cheers our ‘hard work’
Following an afternoon of wine, and quite the drive back from Walcott to West Vail through some amazing back roads, we converged at our concierge Pamela Saden’s house for a raw vegan dinner (click here to see her interview). The dinner had been scheduled for a week, but it had been on our minds for the last few days and ever since we left the wine behind.
So what does a raw vegan dinner constitute? While to begin, cooking in methods that conform to raw vegan is actually much more liberating than the stereotypes suggest, for example we ate salsa, guacamole and hamburgers. Or at least that’s what we called them, in reality we were amazed by the attention to detail and commitment to your diet that a raw vegan diet requires. Raw vegans support a fully vegetarian lifestyle, but follow a strict set of other guidelines to cooking such as the inability to cook foods over 1100 F. I think what all of us really learned from our meal is that your diet is something you should take pride in, its easy to eat whatever is in front of you but showing discipline and using your diet as a means of improving or regulating your life is very honorable.
For our meal, the carrot pecan burgers were made from carrots, pecans, olive oil, mushrooms, cilantro and a few other ingredient before being dehydrated for 8 hours. They were sandwiched between pieces of onion bread that contained onion, flax, sunflower seeds all of which was dehydrated for 2 days. The combination was great, it had a hint of Indian cooking but filled all of us up.
Desert and drinks were also quite the treat, fresh juice preceded our meal and prepped our stomachs for the coming meal. Dessert, well anyone that thinks vegans are missing out hasn’t had Pamela’s cheese cake. Everyone at the table was delighted by it, in fact I’d challenge nearly any Vail Valley restaurant to beat it.
We’re done, no more and be proud if you made it all this way….yes it was long but let me tell you this was one amazing weekend. Hopefully we’ll have more condensed updates for our weekends in the future!!
With the tournament quickly approaching I though it might be a good idea to remind any team entering the Vail Kick It 3v3 Tournament that registration ends Friday, July 25th at 11:00 PM Central Standard Time. Registration is available here for the Vail Kick It Regional Championship taking place August 1-3. The tournament will be held at the Ford Fields and the Vail Valley Athletic Fields which both look amazing, the weather in Vail has been outstanding for the last few weeks and I can only imagine it will stick around for the tournament.
